The Chamber of Doctor Z by JP Vile is the debut title to fall under the new Dark Deeds Pulp imprint of Perseid Press. An Amazing Adventure of Hunter Caine, the story came with the tease of a "perpetually horny Lesbian contact killer and paranormal fixer" and the promise of a "land of monsters and mayhem." It delivers on both counts.

This was pure pulp - an erotically charged, adventure-based bit of horror, complete with monsters, mad scientists, cool weapons, and more. It's a frantically paced short story that doesn't really spend much time on introductions, much less character building, but it has spades of blood, guts, explosions, and ribald flirting. It's so over-the-top that it could have been eye-rollingly bad, especially with the gender-flipped vintage James Bond "wrong place, wrong time, wrong girl" seduction, but the cheesy sexuality (and equally cheesy dialogue) actually keep it on track.

You're not quite sure who the good guys and the bad guys are, and even when you're expecting to be double-crossed, you don't necessarily know how or from where. The monsters come on fast and hard, delivering a level of splatterpunk violence that's perfect for the story, and Hunter is just one of those characters you like from the get-go. What little character building there is happens in the final pages, and it's more than enough to make me want to take on another amazing adventure.

I absolutely loved this. It reminded me of part dystopian, part zombie flick, part pulp trade, and part action-adventure. Add all of that together and you get the first book in the Soldier of Fortune series. I can't wait to see what Vile does for Book 2 and will be getting it as soon as I get an alert that it's ready.
Adventure, action, a fast-paced plot, all kinds of monsters and mad scientists -- what could be better for a weekend escape? The first-person narrator is superb what an attitude! Very enjoyable.
Riveting.... I was hooked by the first chapter.

I received this e-book novella for my birthday. It's a fun read -- a good, old-fashioned pulp adventure hard-boiled dialogue and narration -- a film noir touch to it all. Sci-fi setting, plenty of bad guy, monsters and aliens, and totally action packed. Action scenes are well-written and well-choreographed; easy to follow. Fun dialog, and Hunter Caine is one bad-ass with a perfectly tough, "take no prisoners" attitude. A must read for all fans of New Pulp, and for those who like short fiction adventures.
This is a nice little punch to the face of a novelette, it's a quick read and a fun ride. JP Vile is a talented author, and he takes his fair share of shots with Hunter Caine, a sexy, gun toting mercenary who is just as likely to mount all the men (and women) she encounters as she is to save them from the imminent zombie attacks. And boy, are there a lot of zombie attacks, the beasts come broiling out of the wilderness, and it's all Caine can do to find new and interesting (not to mention gory) ways to dispatch them. You'll burn through this book in no time and be eager for more. Give it a go!
You know you’re onto a sure thing as soon as you start reading, for our heroine – Hunter Caine – opens the story with a brief monologue which ends; “You want something done? Something dirty? Something dangerous? Something distasteful? Call Hunter. You got the cash. I got the flash.”
That sets the tone for what follows – a monstrously entertaining short story that can be devoured in one sitting – which, coincidentally – is what would happen to you if you were to fall prey of one of the zombified shamblers spawned by the fiendish Dr. Z.
Hot chicks; alpha males; guns and gore aplenty; unstoppable ghouls; and witty – gritty dialogue that makes you smile all the way through. What can I say, it’s rip-roaring fun! And Hunter Caine is a whole different ball game to your usual lead character; someone who doesn’t care how the job gets done as long as there’s a pay check at the end of it!
If you like your action with graphic novel hotitude, then this adventure is for you.
