This was a truly great volume. I'll be honest, I didn't really love what Matt Fraction had been doing with the Thor title before this. It's not that it was bad it just felt rushed and jumped around to much without explanation; grand ideas with not enough payoff. That changes here; we first get some backstory on Odin's brother The Serpent from Fear Itself (which I haven't read yet). This tale was solid if as rushed as before. The second part of the book is the best part. In the wake of *SPOILERS* Thor's death, a new God of Thunder rises. This new God is named Tanarus, and he replaces Thor in everyones' memories except Loki, who journeys forth to solve the mystery of his lost brother. This story has action, intrigue, and sets up Asgard's future perfectly. This is one the great Thor stories. The art is also fantastic. Pasqual Ferry returns for this volume and his art has improved immensely since The World Eaters. His style really fits the world of Thor. I would recommend checking this out if you can find a copy somewhere.Tags : The Mighty Thor, Vol. 2 [Matt Fraction] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Mighty Thor Vol 2 Matt Fraction 9780785162438 Books Reviews
I thought the first Volume of Fraction’s Thor was a solid start to the series. This second volume kicks it into high gear.
When Thor died to stop the Serpent during Fear Itself, a God of Thunder rose in his place Tanarus. Only Loki realizes that he isn’t right. He doesn’t remember Thor’s name, but he knows Tanarus is not his brother. Though the story never explicitly says how he knows, it makes sense that the Trickster God of Lies, and master of magic, would sense the wrongness. The All Mothers have taken their place as rulers of Asgardia, but Karnilla, Queen of the Norns, plots to bring them down. As Loki fights to remember his brother with the help of the Silver Surfer, Thor must fight to survive the demogorge.
The various threads of this story all come together in a very satisfying conclusion. There is the usual action and humor, and a climactic final battle, but the story draws a reader in with a strong tale of true heroism. Overall, an excellent read and highly recommended!
i like anything that has to do withthor from marvel, so yeh, decent plot, good drawings
There may be spoilers ahead...
Matt Fraction continues to tell the tales of the Odinson in his run on The Mighty Thor. In this volume, which collects issues 7 - 12 and 7.2 of Fear Itself, we find out what has happened to Thor in the aftermath of the Serpent War.
To recap, Odin's evil brother Cul, aka The Serpent, was freed from his imprisonment by Sin the daughter of the Red Skull. He waged war on the Earth and Asgard but was defeated by Thor but as foretold millennia ago, Thor died in the process. This all happened in the Marvel event Fear Itself.
But Thor is not in Valhalla. He is in limbo and on his way to be consumed by the eater of Gods, the Demogorge. He cannot remember who he is, and neither can the citizens of Asgard. Thanks to some nifty magic by Karnilla, Queen of the Norns, she replaced Thor's presence and history with a new God of Thunder - Tanarus. Tanarus is actually Ulik the Troll who is under orders by his King Geirrodur to infiltrate Asgard and assassinate the All-Mother and pave way for an invasion by the Troll armies.
Asgard meanwhile is undergoing change. After the Serpent war, Odin returned to Asgard-space in self-imposed exile, leaving Fallen Asgard in its ruined state outside Broxton, Oklahoma. Tony Stark and his Stark Resilient company have begun construction of a new floating city whilst the All-Mother; Freyja, Gaea and Idunn, rule in Odin's absence and begin a new era as the entire Nine Realms attempt to unite into a single new republic of ASGARDIA.
But no one remembers Thor.
No one except Loki. With the help of the Silver Surfer, recently 'retired' from active service as Galactus' herald in The Mighty Thor, Vol. 1, Loki tries to recall his brother and stumbles across the Trolls plans to attack Asgard.
Can Loki succeed in helping the Asgardians remember Thor, thus exposing Tanarus/Ulik for the imposter he is and his plans to wipe out the All-Mother?
Can Thor escape the graveyard of the Gods inside the maw of the God-eater Demogorge and return to the land of the living?
Can Asgardia prevail against the combined might of the Troll army and Queen Karnilla?
All will be revealed inside this fabulous story.
With stunning artwork by Pasqual Ferry and Pepe Larraz and colouring by Frank D'Armata, this is an excellent tale of magic, mayhem and might from one of the current best comic book writers on top of his game. You may want to read Fear Itself to give you an idea of what has led to this story, but it's not essential. All hail Asgardia!
Matt Fraction's Thor run continues here with the mystery of who is Tanarus and its a fun read. Young Loki is a delight. The schemes of the villains are fantastic. The changes to Asgard are monumental and for the positive. The art by Pascal Ferry is very good but the guest artists weren't up to his level. Overall, a very good read.
Fraction continues his run on Thor, with Vol. 2 which finds the world of Thor completely turned upside down after the events of Fear Itself. While Vol. 1 I found to be incredibly engaging and visually stunning, this feels like somewhat of a misstep. The story feels a bit rushed and miss Coipel's art work. While still a fun story, I hope Vol 3. gets back to where the potential of Vol. 1 glimpsed at.
My Thor read-a-thon continues and asks the question, Who is Tanaraus? This is a good read, but drags a little. Story by Matt Fraction. Art by Ferry, Kubert, & Larraz. This was a fun read.
