The prose in this novel are extraordinary and something I must give kudos to right away. The world-building is also vivid and written in a way that draws the reader in as if they are in the book themselves.

I love first person POV and that made it easier to follow. Also, the character arc was great and something readers can relate to. Nothing felt forced and each plot twist happened naturally- just like life happens. The main character's journey was excellent and something we all will go through at one point or another.

This is a great book I would recommend. It also reminded me a bit of Under The Tuscan Sun.

This book was a masterpiece for me the arts enthusiast. I have to say that this revived my seemingly exhausted ardor for all things art and passion. The plot involves a couple called Ben and Lee Alto who at the beginning are said to be on their way to Russia to adopt a baby boy as they are quite an unfortunate couple in the area of child conception. They had been trying for a baby among themselves throughout their marriage but there are always miscarriages or the issue of Ben not having enough sperm count. Their baby boy is Mikhail (they call him Misha for short) and they rejoice in adopting him and raising him as their own.
Time passes and they are both working in New York City but by 2001 with the occurrence of 9/11, Ben learns from Lee that she had been cheating on him for a while now with a French family friend of theirs. Ben is deeply hurt but keeps his cool and from then on their lives are not so perfect as a couple anymore. Ben becomes a professor of the arts at some college and although he and Lee are still together, they are not as in love as they used to be anymore. They both travel to France with Misha later in the novel and there, Ben reunites with an old flame by the name of Ann-Marie who together rekindle their romance.
This book was such a beauty for me. Despite of the sadness and deepness it contains, I was in awe of the references to Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Matisse to name a few. There was also a great artwork from ancient Greece that I found out about from this book which is the “Victory of Samothrace” that is on display at the Louvre in Paris, France. You see why I love this book so much? Yes, it has reignited my passion for the arts and it does have a faint Danielle Steel feel to it since it’s a romance read but it also includes the beauty that is of Europe and the artists there (particularly France).
I wholeheartedly recommend this “beauty” to all arts enthusiasts out there. Books like this are kind of rare during this age we are in right now as writers in this day seem to focus more on dystopia and futuristic elements. But yeah, this has a classic feel to it so buy a copy for yourself today if you are a fan of the visual arts like me because it just flows so richly with all the glamour and aestheticism of France. It brings back the reasons why I dreamed of traveling to France, the city of romance and art when I was a teenager. Good read, good stuff! Get it today for your kindle library now!
A Summer of Good-Byes is very enjoyable to read. The book has a nice writing style to it. The reading definitely flowed well.
We see interruptions going back and forth but overall the book held my interest. Things certainly changed after the first miscarriage.

Fred Misurella's novel, A Summer of Good-Byes, is a fascinating account of the marital shock that leads to the growth in Ben and Lee Alto's relationship. Ben, as a supportive friend to an ex-lover, learns to let go of his sense of loss and come to a feeling of equilibrium. The novel's opening chapter is a straightforward narrative of an American couple's trip deep into Russia to adopt a baby boy. It is a journey that is at every moment simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary. The sense of traveling with them, of being there, is uncanny. The book is constantly intriguing. An added bonus is the author's wise, beautiful prose.
Ben and Lee Alto are an ordinary couple who go through the trials and tribulations of life that include struggles with infertility and venturing into the foreign adoption process. When they finally are able to adopt their son, Misha, they’re life seems complete. Then 9/11 happens and their world turns upside when a secret comes to light and a person from Bens past reappears that causes additional questions to arise.

This story is beautifully written. The descriptions of the French countryside, art, and especially the emotions of 9/11 brought raw emotion that I wasn’t expecting. The only trouble I had while reading this book was the in-depth explanations of art history - although I understood it as the path of the main character, I thought a lot of it was unnecessary and long winded that caused me to struggle to stay focused and longing for more character dialogue and story.
Ben Alta is an art critic and professor, living an ordinary life with his artist wife Lee and son Misha until the tragic events of 9/11 trigger a revelation that threatens to undo his family. In an attempt to salvage his world, Ben takes his family on a summer abroad in the French countryside, hoping that the art and history will be the perfect atmosphere to strengthen their bond. But then, an unexpected face from Ben's past crosses their path, forcing Ben to question everything he thought he knew....

Alas, this novel just never captured me. I was unable to feel a connection to any of the characters, except for a few that conjured some mild irritation. I also thought a few of them had gaping holes in the motivation behind their extreme actions or reactions.

The narrator, Ben, frequently goes off onto tangents about art/art history/Van Gogh as part of his musing. Perhaps, if you are an avid artist or art historian, these may strike a chord with you, but as I am outside of that niche, I found them to be completely uninteresting. Ben's long winded tangents and reminiscing overshadows much of what should have been devoted to the plot of the book. Although the majority of the novel happens over a summer, it feels like few things ever really happen.

Overall, I was just bored and couldn't wait for it to be over. Unless you fall into the art niche I mentioned above, I'd encourage you to pass this one by.
