The Bad People Stole My God eBook Doug Philips

I found this book to be an inspiring read on many levels. Seldom does an author write about religion -- his/her own, or another's -- yet presents his/her ideas in a nonjudgmental, yet personal way. This was a fascinating story of the author's transition from one viewpoint to another. And, I loved that his mind remains open. What is life if not transition (and, yes, I know some will disagree with me on that)? IMHO, life is about learning, relearning, evolving to the next level, while remaining open to yet more learning and evolution. This is a book that needed to be written, and I thank Doug Phillips for "putting himself out there" and doing the writing! I believe it took a lot of courage on his part. Much gratitude!

The Bad People Stole My God eBook Doug Philips Reviews

Having lost my little faith in the teens, I haven't given religion much thought since. With current rise in both religious extremism (US and Middle East) and outspoken atheism, I've started to read a lot from both sides. (Well, to be honest, most from the atheists. They are fun. And I agree with them.)
But I've been looking for this specific tale what happens in the mind of a devout theist turning to the other side? This book tells that story, with fun, with respect, with honesty.

4.5 stars, rounded up because of the price.
While this book has a humorous title and categorized under humor, I personally did not think that was an accurate classification. However, that may be because I took the author's journey back when I was in 5th grade, 30 + years ago. A he'll fire & brimstone priest called me a blasphemous list & said I would go to he'll. Why? Because my religion book, previous year's edition mentioned purgatory & limbo, but the new version removed it.
It takes personal conviction to go through the analysis that the author has gone through and lays down his journey in a very straightforward, logical manner even though, emotionally, this must have been a difficult journey after 40 years of believing something different.
The only reason I have this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I had a different expectation on the humor aspect. Regardless, this book shows how we should question what we believe in, whether religion, politics or life and not to blindly accept something because someone tells us to.
I also have hope that I'm not crazy for my beliefs knowing someone else out there has come to the same conclusion.
This was a great read!

I, personally, wasn't expecting much for a buck, but I couldn't put it down. Many pages of stellar insights. And my experience parallels his to a large degree. (Except that I was a fundamentalist, not a Catholic. And had the traumatizing experience of reading the Bible myself for the first time at the age of nine.)

A couple of sentences tripped me up, and think that Mr Phillips is mistaken about the meanings and usages of a few words. So I'm only 99% in love with this work.

I'll be looking for more by Doug Phillips!
This book maybe too "tongue in cheek" to give to believers as I am sure they will take it as an attack instead of keeping an open mind and trying to understand the facts that the author is trying to point out. In my experience, it's too much energy to counter a believer when they are trying to push their beliefs on you, but I still try. Believers seem to have convoluted answers to every rational question you ask them about their beliefs. By the way, I was baptized at age 10, read the bible (aren't you supposed too?), and started to ask the same questions the author asked. (yes..I was kinda smart back then) and by the time I was 12, I was a nonbeliever. 40 years later, I still am.
Doug Philips tells how he traveled the road from believer to Non-believer. Sometimes solemn, sometimes sarcastic, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, the narrative is more like a stand-up monologue that a Theological Treatise. Straightforward and witty, the book is easy to read.

Philips' story is relevant to any "religious" Westerner who is questioning the bowdlerized "Bible Stories" offered in Sermons and Sunday Schools. Starting out as a life-long Catholic, he describes his sequence of "mistakes" that led him away from his comfortable faith into "apostasy."

His "Mistake #1" was asking "Who wrote the Bible?" which led him to investigate the origins of Christianity which in turn led him to the realization that millions of learned people seriously rejected the childish biblical tales he had been taught to accept without question. This initiation to skepticism was left unresolved while he busied himself with the concerns of a responsible family man. What a familiar story!

Eventually, he had to address the nagging doubts, and he did what he recommends that everyone do Forget what emanates from the pulpits and actually READ the Bible. This was his "Mistake #4." His discussion of this experience is a jewel of sarcasm.

Even though the language is sometimes crude, I enjoyed the absence of theological argot. Anyone who appreciates comic monologues should enjoy this little book.

The misspellings and grammatical errors are a distraction, but hey, it's cheap!

I recommend the book as light reading for skeptics, but Believers will likely be offended by it.
